Living History ... Colonial America

In our adventure of learning about American History this year,

we've been reading a lot of historical fiction ... we love reading! ...
and have been doing a lot of hands on activities to help history
come alive ... living history.
These last few weeks, we've been learning about
Colonial America.
Some of our activities have included:
Grace is learning to knit
(did you know girls started knitting around
age 4 in Colonial times?)

making dip candles

baking hearth bread and making butter

and to bring it all together ...

a Colonial Dinner

dinner together as family eaten by the light of our dip candles
the meal consisted of venison stew and
whole wheat hearth bread with butter
(the kids loved it ... the food and experience!)

We also learned about Benjamin Franklin during this time and Nathan
is printing his own weekly newspaper for the
month of January ...
