our trip to Gettysburg

We have been studying the Civil War ...
and wanted to go on a fall camping trip ...
so the four of us plus my mom ventured
to Gettysburg for a long Columbus Day weekend.

my two soldiers

yes. That's a film camera.
My brothers old camera and mine were
sitting around along with a couple
rolls of black&white film ...
so we let each child have a camera
to take their own pictures on our trip.
They LOVED it!
I can't wait to get their film developed and
see what they took pictures of.

We took our time doing the cd/book
driving tour ... getting out and
exploring at most of the places.

Little Round Top

Devil's Den
(the kids' favorite place!)

We are tent campers, but my mom is not ...
so we stayed in this cozy cabin.

It was fun to explore the civilian
side of the Battle of Gettysburg!
We had read about the Shriver family,
(whose home is pictured above and we toured!)
their neighbor Tillie Pierce,
and Jennie Wade (who was the only
civilian killed during this battle ...
while baking bread! The kids are pointing
to the bullet holes in the door.)

We took time to visit the Gettysburg cemetery and
see where Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address.

We had a wonderful time exploring Gettysburg
and being together!
The best part for me was seeing the looks of
recognition on the kids' faces when we heard or
saw something we had learned about ... and
watching their excitement for learning!
