How we homeschool! - Music and Art Appreciation

Music Appreciation

We want our children to have an appreciation for
music and art.

We listen to Christian music.  But
last year, I also added to our playlist
 one Classical Composer per month.
We listen to this during our focused learning time.
And during afternoon quiet time, we have loved
listening to Classical Kids cds.
These great cds combine a historical fiction story
about the composer combined with their pieces of work.
We have also enjoyed attending the free concerts
Through these experiences and exposures,
we are learning about composers and
at times, able to recognize their works.

Nathan and Grace also experience music in a different way when they
participate in our church's Children's Choir.

Art Appreciation

This year, we added art appreciation to our goals.
We have picked a handful of famous artist to learn about.
We read their biography, study their work,
recreate one of their pieces of work, read living books,
create art inspired by the studied artist...and of course
keep an art journal.

So far, we've studied DaVinci...
read Leonardo's Horse
colored blackline of the Mona Lisa
sketched and watercolor painted birds

We set up an art area in our basement ... per
children's request ... giving them more
freedom to create art.

(Grace is a self proclaimed artist and poet!)

studying Picasso...
we read Picasso and the Girl with the Ponytail
studied examples of cubism and other works by Picasso
colored blackline of The Three Musicians
created Picasso Faces out of clay (pictured below)

Next, we'll be studying VanGogh.

And we are always making something crafty around here!
