This is our second year studying American History.
The decision to dive into American History was interest led.
And my children have fallen in love with history!
We read a lot of historical fiction and some non-fiction.
Booklist for Civil War:
Across Five Aprils
Rifles for Watie
Will at the Battle of Gettysburg
Shades of Gray
Journal of Tillie Pierce
Just a Few Words, Mr. Lincoln
Clara Barton
Lee and Grant at Appomatox
We do a lot of hands-on activities to learn about
that time period in history.
We made hard tack and johnny cakes like
the soldiers ate.
Grace is working on a potholder baby doll quilt.
(a common quilt style made for soldiers)
Nathan made a regiment flag.
We go on family fieldtrips and to reinactments
to learn about history.
(Remember our trip to Gettysburg?)
And my children are constantly
"playing" history!
After Civil War, we started learning about Westward Expansion.
We fell in love with everything Little House on the Prairie
a couple years ago ... and have read all the books.
So we are digging into other events and perspectives
of the Westward Expansion.
We have learned about the Gold Rush,
Little Bighorn, Transcontinental RR,
and Pony Express.
Book List:
Sarah, Plain, and Tall - Skylark - Caleb's Story (audio cd)
Ballad of Lucy Whipple
Riding the Pony Express
The Building of the First Continental RR
Red Hawk's Account of Custer's Last Battle
We started reading the Birchbark House series before Christmas
to learn about the Westward Expansion from the
perspective of Native Americans. We plan to finish
this series after the new year.
We took a break over the holidays from Westward Expansion
to read books about Christmas during WWI,
the Truce on Christmas day, and Christmas during the Great Depression.
